Russian Hosting Provider Taken Offline

A notorious hosting provider reputed as being a safe haven for the Web's bad actors has been taken offline.

According to HostExploit, VolgaHost, a hosting provider based in Russia, was taken offline Jan. 17 after being de-peered by Russian ISP RUNNET.ru, its upstream provider.

"VolgaHost is well known to HostExploit," blogged Jart Armin, an analyst with HostExploit. "It topped our ranking of 'Bad Hosts' for the 4th quarter of 2010, having been ranked #3 in the two previous quarters."

HostExploit is an organization of volunteers created as resource for those fighting cyber-crime. According to the group, VolgaHost was home to a number of botnet command and control servers, and was linked to the infamous Zeus crimeware.

"This is a major step in the ongoing fight against botnet hosting and CyberCrime as world's worst host VolgaHost, and other associated crime servers, have disappeared," Armin wrote.
